Charles J. Beirne, S.J., '56, 1938-2010

In your prayers, please remember the soul of Charles J. Beirne, S.J., '56 who passed away recently. A native of Jersey City, Fr. Beirne entered the Society of Jesus in 1956. His 54 years as a Jesuit saw him take on many roles, including the presidency of LeMoyne College from 2000-2007.

New Fiscal Year, New Faces

Prep’s Office of Institutional Advancement – which encompasses the Offices of Alumni Relations, Annual Giving, Communications and Special Events – works to advance the school’s overall mission of forming men of competence, conscience and compassion by securing continued financial support and thus ensuring the stability of New Jersey’s Jesuit High School. With the start of the new fiscal year on July 1, some of the faces in the department have changed, but the commitment to keeping a Prep education within reach for future generations of students and families remains the same.

Memories on the Menu at Milestone Dinner

Nearly 200 alumni and guests filled the Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday, June 12, to celebrate their Milestone Reunions. The Milestone Reunion dinner was the centerpiece of Prep’s Alumni Weekend, and the classes of ’65, ’70, ’75, ’80, ’85, ’90, ’95, and ’00 turned out for an evening of cocktails, conversations, and many, many memories.

Runners Take to the Streets in Inaugural 5k

The inaugural running of the Pride & Glory 5k brought a strong contingent of runners – including Prep alumni, students and parents, as well as running enthusiasts and friends of Prep – to the streets of downtown Jersey City on Sunday morning. The race, part of Alumni Weekend 2010, challenged participants with a fast, scenic course through Paulus Hook and along the Hudson River waterfront.

Pride & Glory Night Brings Together Generations

On Friday night, about 150 alumni, spanning the classes of 1944 to 2006, gathered in the cafeteria to celebrate Prep and enjoy a classic beefsteak dinner at the third annual Pride & Glory Night. The guest of honor, and recipient of the Pride & Glory Award, was Jim Feeney, '78, P'10,'14.

Class of 2010 Welcomed to Alumni Community at Senior Breakfast

The Class of 2010 will graduate Sunday during Prep's 132nd Commencement Exercises at Saint Peter's College, but before their final transition from students to alumni during graduation weekend, the Prep Alumni Association welcomed the class into the community of more than 13,000 Prep graduates living around the world during the annual Senior Breakfast.

Fr. Edward Salmon, S.J., '54 Named Interim President at McQuaid

The Board of Trustees at McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester, NY, has unanimously approved Fr. Edward Salmon, S.J., ’54 as interim president. Fr. Salmon is no stranger to the post of president, having served in that role at Prep from 1987 to 1990. Fr. Salmon is currently serving as Superior of the America House Jesuit community and Director of Ignatian Identity at Regis High School in New York City, and served at McQuaid from 2002 to 2007 as Superior of the Jesuit community, Faculty and Staff chaplain at McQuaid Jesuit, and chair of the Board’s Ignatian Identity committee. All of us at Prep wish him the best of luck in his new role!

Got a Mr. Rooney Story? Prep Magazine Wants to Know!

Prep Magazine is planning a tribute in the Fall 2010 issue to the memory of a man who became synonymous with Prep during his tenure here, and who figures into the Prep lore retold by the more than 4,700 alumni who passed through his classroom in the course of more than 30,000 class periods during a career in which he was absent, incredibly, less than ten days. But we need your help!
