All students are required to study one year of classical Latin at Saint Peter's Prep, while all scholars (both Ignatian and Sheehan) are required to study two years. The second year for non-scholars, third, fourth years of study are offered as electives. The Latin program approaches the language through analysis of grammar, linguistics, and Roman culture and civilization. The grammatical deconstruction of Latin and the inevitable gains in knowledge of English grammar are vital to the program, as is the ability to translate and comprehend texts accurately. In 2016-2017, the Latin 1 program has redesigned their course to be self-paced and gradeless. For more on what that means, read this letter that was sent to all freshman parents at the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year, or refer to the Latin 1 program’s blog, where we are recounting our experiences.
